Best of all it's totally free! Come on people, let's look for a decent simple estimating/invoicing app for Mac OS X. With the repeated pushing of Joist, I think I can get away with mentioning Invoice2go one more time. But I'll add that it might be worth ignoring the reviews and seeing for yourself with a free trial of Invoice2go or the free version of Joist. When the big changes to Invoice2go were released, it was flooded with bad reviews - most people hated it, including me.
I stuck with the old version for another 8 months and tried it again, and decided to upgrade. Fyi - Invoice2go doesn't have anything like the 'assemblies' you mentioned above (as far as I know). 'This app is better than any pc software I have ever wasted money on. And the kicker is joist is free'. Joist is FREE to Download and FREE to use - available on iPhone, iPad, & the web.
I’m still really lost about what QuickBooks invoicing and estimates does or can’t do, compared to the rest of these other mentioned apps that makes QB unappealing, particularly if you are already paying for Qb? You can set your products up however you like- Mine are simple. I have Labor- and the hourly rate, I have Quoted Price, I have Materials, equipment, ETC. When estimating, I use the QB as the messenger, basically lists the price for the job, and I use google docs to type up a job/customer specific proposal and set the terms and scope of work. Save that as PDF, attach to the estimate, and send away. Then you can convert it to invoice when they accept, I’ve heard the comment that you want to keep your invoice/estimating separate from your accounting.
But I’m just a little guy, and it works really well for me. I couldnt fathom paying for a second app to do the same thing that QB can do. QB has so many versions that it's hard to search for help without it leading you down a wrong direction. It is not user friendly, a user needs training or practice.
Too much info on sales and customers for every company person to access. Multiple address such as bill to and service location show up as shipping address. I don't know if it handled child / parent customers well. Customizing the invoice template is difficult, dosen't always work, and can't be edited after creation. QB has no scheduling or time tracking.
The inventory / service list is lacking such as categories, details not shown on invoice, maybe custom part numbers. You can search by item name but not description. For me by default it kept putting in net 30 in terms and adding 30 days on the due date. Not saying you couldn't change it when creating. Just that the default is not what I wanted in most cases. No payment details on the invoice.
Such as method, date, or check #. 1 time items are saved into inventory. Does not have ability to put in assemblies of labor and materials. Dose not have different price rate feature on standard version.
QB is bad for having your business built around them then raising pricing or adding pricey adds, but nobody wants to jump because of the possible disruption. By the time you add addition features, users, other programs / apps to fill in the gaps you can do better. With features such as mapping, address checking, GPS locations, auto text messaging, scheduling, time tracking, sale of assemblies, etc.
